Hair extensions explained – all you need to know
Hair extensions are amazing! They can transform your hair from short and wispy into a truly magnificent mane in just a few hours and they are certainly no longer just for WAGs, Hollywood A listers and pop stars.
Hair extensions are now mainstream and can take your hair to new lengths and give it that additional volume you’ve always dreamed about. But before you go ahead with extensions, there are a few things you need to know….
Be sure to use a specialist
Not every hairdresser knows how to apply hair extensions, and in the wrong hands they can cause terrible damage to your natural hair. Always use a professional and if you’re unsure, ask to see evidence of their work and their training. Any reputable salon will offer you a consultation before you proceed. At Lifestyle salons in Milton Keynes and Aylesbury we offer a free consultation so that you can discuss the look you wish to achieve and then offer you personalised advice based on this and of course your budget.
Go for the best extensions you can afford
There’s no getting away from it, extensions can be expensive. If you’re only looking to change up your style once in a while, maybe for a night out, then clip in hair extensions will be fine. But remember these can’t be worn all the time – if you want something more permanent you’ll need to go for another system which is more of an investment but will give stunning results for months on end.
Have your hair extensions customised
The key to believable, natural looking extensions is customisation. Your stylist should be able to colour match them to your own hair and this is worth doing even if you just want clip in hair extensions. Blending them with your hair cut and colour will mean they will complement your natural hair perfectly.
Real hair extensions
Real human hair extensions are definitely preferable to synthetic hair. If you go for synthetic hair you won’t be able to wash them or use heat stylers on them so you’re really limiting your options.
Remy hair extensions
Remy hair extensions are considered to be the finest quality of human hair. The hair’s cuticles are kept intact and are aligned in one direction which makes them look completely natural.
Look after your hair extensions
Hair extensions are a big investment, so make sure you get the most out of them. Many extensions can last between six and nine months, but only if you treat them well. Follow the aftercare advice offered by your stylist and make sure you go back to the salon for the follow up appointments that they recommend.
Extensions that use nano loop or micro loop technology for example, will need tightening up every 6-8 weeks, where as bonded extensions may need removing and reapplying. It may seem a bit of an effort but it’s worth it as you’ll extend your hair extensions’ life by months.
Hair extensions are fabulous and once you’ve had them you’ll wonder how you ever managed before! So whether you’re 25, 45 or 65, there’s no reason you can’t have your hair lengthened and volumised with a gorgeous set of extensions.
