Our Top 9 Tips for Healthy Summer Hair…

Summer can be tough on your hair with exposure to the sun, the sand and the water. So now’s the time to start thinking about how to protect it. With these summer hair care tips, you can keep your hair healthy and fabulous whether you’re at home or abroad this summer.

The heat and the sun can make hair dull, lifeless and brittle, but by following our simple tips you can make sure you’ve got stunning holiday hair all summer long.

1.  Trim your hair regularly

Have your hair trimmed regularly and you will help prevent split ends and stop any that do form from moving further up the hair strands. If your hair is in good condition before you leave for your holiday it has a better chance of staying that way.

2.  Lock in moisture

Even the relatively weak British sun can have a drying effect on your hair, so imagine what Mediterranean or Far Eastern heat will do.
So it’s never too soon to begin a regime of deep moisturising. There are loads of great products that you can use on a weekly or fortnightly basis that will restore moisture levels and then lock them in, making your hair silky soft and shiny. We recommend MoroccanOil’s Intense Hydrating Mask for thick hair and Hydrating Mask Light for fine hair.

3. Use a leave-in conditioner

Still thinking about moisture; when you’re on the beach or by the pool, try using a leave-in conditioner or treatment which can be rinsed out at the end of the day. This will help protect your hair against the sun’s harmful rays and help to retain the moisture you have built up with your conditioning regime.

4. Use a colour protection shampoo and conditioner

The sun really is the enemy of colour and will make your colour fade faster than usual. To minimise the effect of the sun, make sure your shampoo and conditioner are colour-safe. At Lifestyle, we recommend KMS Colour Vitality shampoo and conditioner to maximise colour retention and vibrancy.

5- Avoid “The Green Tinge!”

If you have blonde hair – natural or dyed – then this one of our summer hair care tips is just for you. The chlorine in the swimming pool is a particular threat to blonde hair. So to avoid a subtle green tinge from developing use a specially formulated blonde shampoo and conditioner like Paul Mitchell’s Forever Blonde range. 6.  Protect against chlorine

Who doesn’t love to cool off in the pool after a few hours of sunbathing? But those pesky chemicals in the water aren’t great for our hair. So before you get in the pool rinse your hair and then spritz with the fabulous MoroccanOil Glimmer Shine. This will help to protect against the effects of chlorine. Then, give your hair another quick rinse when you get out of the pool.

7.  Avoid tangles in the wind

The wind can damage your hair, causing split ends and breakage. If you’re out on the water sailing or windsurfing or just meandering along a windswept beach, tie your hair back into a sleek ponytail. Or if your hair is shorter, go for a scarf or a cap.

8.  Wear a hat

If you only follow one of our summer hair care tips, make it this one! A fabulous, wide-brimmed hat is always a great investment and it will help protect your hair and scalp, as well as your face, from the sun’s harmful UV rays.

9. Keep your cool

If you have long hair you’ll be looking for ways to stay cool and stylish. Try and avoid any style that is high or tight as it will increase tension on your hair and could cause it to break. Instead, wear your hair in a gentle updo. Or try a casual, messy braid. It really is perfect for those relaxed summer days.

A casual braid will keep you cool in summer.

Follow these summer hair care tips and you’ll be sure to have beautiful and healthy hair all summer long.
