5 things you need to know before changing your hairstyle

From time to time we all fancy a bit of a change, and there’s no better way to achieve instant impact than changing your hairstyle. But before you take the plunge there are a few things you need to bear in mind.
Know your face shape
Of course, you can choose whatever style you want, but you need to be aware that not every hairstyle suits every face shape. Some are more flattering than others so if you’re thinking of changing your hairstyle it’s a good idea to choose one that is going to look good with your particular shape.
Spend some time online looking at celebrities who have a similar face shape as your own and see what styles they’re wearing.
Gather together some photos to bring in to the salon and then have a chat with your stylist. She will be able to advise which styles are going to suit you best.
And if you’ve fallen in love with a style that’s not quite right for your face shape she may be able to adapt it to suit you better.
Consider your hair texture
As well as thinking about face shape, it’s important to take into account your natural hair texture when planning a new hairstyle. Unfortunately, your ideal hairstyle might not be achievable with your hair.
If you have coarse, curly hair, Blake Lively’s wash-and-go waves just aren’t going to happen. Or if your hair is fine and thin you sadly won’t be able to achieve Beyoncé’s texture and volume.
Try and be realistic. You’re much better working with the hair that you’ve got and finding a style that will accentuate its positives. Again, your stylist will be able to give you advice and let you know how reasonable your dream style is.
Be realistic
Yes, we know realism can be a bit dull sometimes, but when it comes to your hair a small dose does save on disappointment!
We can all get carried away, looking at celebrities and coveting their stunning locks, but it’s important to remember the reality. Half the time all that length and volume has been achieved with a ton of extensions and chances are they spend several hours with their celebrity stylist before every red carpet appearance.
Now of course we’d love to see you every couple of days in the salon to style you, but let’s be honest, that’s not really an option for most of us.
So be realistic and think about what is achievable in ‘normal’ life.
Think about your lifestyle
Some of us want to just wash and go, whilst others are happy to spend an hour blow-drying and styling our hair. Or you may need to tie your hair back for work or for the gym.
Think about your lifestyle before settling on a hairstyle. For example, if you’re not keen on styling but are happy to visit the salon every 5 or 6 weeks to maintain the shape, then a crop could well suit you.
Or if you’re good at managing your own hair and enjoy styling and curling it, then a more involved style probably isn’t going to be a problem.
Make sure your stylist knows where you stand to ensure you leave the salon with a style you can recreate at home in the time
you have available.
Make sure you’re ready
If you’re going for a major restyle it’s usually best
not to do it on a whim. Hair can be cut very quickly but takes a good while longer to grow back again.
So make sure you are ready before you take the plunge. And if you’re going from very long to short, you can always do it in a couple of stages to see how you like the idea.
At Lifestyle, we pride ourselves on really listening to our clients’ wishes and giving them good advice. So if you’re thinking of changing your hairstyle we’d love to help. Rest assured, your stylist will make sure she takes things like face shape, your natural hair and your lifestyle into account when helping you to decide on your next great hairstyle.
